How can we make sure our child is ready to start potty training?

Taking care of every day of our babies makes us possible to be part of every beautiful thing that happened in their life. The kids communicate with us all the time that we are with them even though they may not have started the conversation yet. Through body language, detached syllables, or any word they have just learned to pronounce, they let us know their needs. Staying next to them we have a great chance to identify the right moment for beginning the potty training with them.

  • Kids begin to prepare themselves biologically and psychologically for this process.
  • Every child is different but some of these signals are evident in most children.
  • Your baby begins to pee or poop a few minutes later after he is waking up.
  • Your baby starts not to urinate or defecate (pee and poop) in his diaper during sleep (nap time).
  • His diaper can be dry for many hours (more than usually) during the day or the night.
  • Baby has shown interest when the others have used the potty.
  • Your baby doesn’t like to stay for a long time in a dirty diaper.
  • Baby wants your attention after poop or pees.
  • Your baby begins to tell in his way that he just poops or pees.
  • The baby begins to sit and hides when he is pooping or peeing in the diaper
  • Runs to the bathroom when he’s ready to go.
  • Takes the potty by herself and sits in it to show you that is ready to go.

Which is the right age for potty training and, what is early potty training?

Every parent wants to know the right time that the child must start potty training. What is the best method for this process, using early potty training or waiting until our kid to be ready for this step?

Discussions about this are numerous. Some studies approve starting potty training at a young child, even though the child is not yet able to fully understand this process. Early potty training or “natural baby hygiene” is about introducing the baby to the toilet, from the first quarterly of the baby’s life.

The infant potty training practiced massively at the early age of children, in many countries, located in Africa, Asia or, Eastern Europe (the latter more during, the former communist-era).In these countries, early potty training has used for cultural and economic reasons.  They consider it not healthy to use diapers for their children. It is not healthy, too. Cloth diapers are used massively in these places. Parents in these countries consider it normal for the child to remain diaper-free during the potty training process and, they don’t worry about pee accidents.

Many parents prefer to start potty training with their babies since the baby is 3 months old and, some others want to wait until their children are aware of this process. Despite the different theories and practices, we should keep in mind that every child is unique. Every child has their developmental stages, just as our child naturally learns to sit, stand up, talk, the same way will come the right time for beginning potty training.

Psychologists or doctors claim that children feel safe and ready for this phase about 18 months old.
The best time for potty training consider the age of 2 years old. It is more difficult with a child of age 3. It is easier to train a child at the age of 2 years old because he has more ability to develop potty habits.

If the parents begin training their children after the age of 3, it needs more time because older children have learned to ignore body signals and need more time for relearning them.

Pros and cons of starting potty training at a young age

Benefits of Baby potty training at a young age

  • Elimination of skin rash and urinary tract infections caused by diaper use;
  • Save money on diapers and invest them in our other child’s needs;
  • Protect the environment by producing fever non-biodegradable diapers;
  • Minimize the rate and risks from urinary tract infection during life;
  • The parent can spend more time with their infants since this process is long and need much more time.

Risks of Baby potty training at a young age

  • Lack of proper development of the child’s bladder. For the best bladder development, children should urinate without inhibition. The fact that they are not yet conscious about, but forced peeing according to the schedules imposed by the parents can bring these consequences.
  • Hygienic child’s problems: chronic holding causes daily pee and poop accidents, bed-wetting, urinary tract infections. The studies have confirmed that children with bed-wetting problems have also constipation problems.

My best potty-training techniques for girls

I’m going to break down some of the potty training techniques, that I have started to use with my daughter.

1. I have introduced my daughter to the potty after she was 18 months and, she has given me the first signals about it.

2. I help her learn about it. We watch together, baby potty training videos and songs to show her how other kids are doing in this process.

3. To buy the right potty equipment and help her to be familiar and comfortable with it. I bought her a pink potty chair months ago. At first, I instructed her to sit there with clothes to get the reflexes. I’m going to buy a potty seat with a ladder. In that way, she will feel like an adult and gain security in the process.

4. To talk to her about it, illustrating myself when I need to go to the toilet for my needs

5. To use her abilities to imitate me in achieving positive results with potty training. I’m her mother and, my baby should learn from me. I’m going to motivate her to wear cute girls’ underwear.

6. To implement a potty training schedule. I have prepared a training schedule that I will monitor and update on my child’s performance.

7. To introduce the toilet paper to her, and, to learn my daughter, how to wipe herself after she pees.

8. To let her naked for some time during the day. In this way, she will learn there is no need for a diaper anymore.

9. To have a fun time during the training. We read and play together with potty training games.

10. To be patient with her and encourage her to try again if she fails

11. To motivate her with a trophy or award after the positive result.

12. To start training for the night as well, eliminating fluids at least one hour before bedtime and using the potty before bedtime and at night if the baby wakes up on their own.

13. To eliminate the diaper after successful training.

Despite all the above, I will not force my daughter, but I patiently will take the time to get through each step with her. I have better results when she first understands what is next step and, then I move on with the training program.

Every child has their character and personality, some more difficult than others, we have to love our children as they are, without trying to impose them, to achieve our parents’ goals. Potty training can be a long and persistent process, but we will never complain or give up because we are Mothers.
